The Woven Danish Christmas Heart

For my rebranded logo, I wanted something special, unique, and simple. It didn’t take long for David to come up with the basic design after I told him my vision for the SSB logo. We started adjusting things and tweaking it to make it just right. How do you capture hygge, a complex word and concept, in a logo? We added a plain heart and I knew we were headed in the right direction. It was then that I realized there was a perfect way to add a touch of Danish hygge: the traditional Danish woven Christmas heart.

The oldest known woven Christmas hearts were made by the Danish author Hans Christian Andersen in 1860. In 1871, the first guide to making them was published in the “Official Nordic handicraft Journal.” In the early 1900s Danish children began crafting the woven Christmas hearts in school to improve fine motor skills and creativity. Now, they are a Danish Christmas staple and can be made with the simple pattern shown here or much more intricate patterns. When woven together correctly, the heart forms a little basket where sweet treats are placed for future consumption. The heart is then hung on the Christmas tree to be enjoyed as decoration. A Christmas craft to do with the whole family by candlelight? It has hygge written all over it. So happy we were able to find the perfect missing piece to bring my logo together!
